Until about 3 years ago, I didn’t know about Margaret. That’s because I did not know that my great great grandfather, Thomas Augustine Jones, had a brother. Even after 20+ years of research there are still mysteries.
Margaret’s life took a turn for the worst in the early1900s when her husband, John Charles Jones, became disabled and could not work. Previously he had been a blacksmith, just like his brother. But, whatever ailed him left him bedridden.
Margaret’s troubles would only deepen when the doctor came on the morning February 25th 1905 to check on John and found him dead. The cause of death was gas asphyxiation from the kitchen stove. Margaret was taken into custody and for several months was under suspicion for murder.
That same year saw another death. Her son in law, Frank Walther was admitted to Napa Hospital. I am not sure if it was a mental hospital at that time. He died of apoplexy. Margaret’s daughter, Jeanette, found her self a widow and fatherless at the age of 38.
In the end, John’s cause of death was deemed a suicide and no charges were brought against Margaret. But, there must have been an emotional and psychological toll associated with the incident. Margaret died just three years later. The cause of death was senility. She was only 61.
